Anthony Smith Booked for Gamebred FC Return

Anthony Smith’s second appearance for Gamebred FC now has a date, an opponent and a headline spot. The former UFC title challenger is scheduled to face Jordan Heiderman on Oct. 2 in the Dominican Republic, where their bout will top the promotion’s heavyweight grand prix card. The event is due to stream on DAZN under Gamebred FC’s new broadcast agreement.

The booking follows Smith’s successful promotional debut in April. He submitted fellow UFC veteran Chase Sherman with a rear-naked choke, giving his post-UFC career an encouraging start. Heiderman brings a 7-1 professional record and previous experience in the Professional Fighters League. That makes the main event a genuine competitive step for Smith rather than a ceremonial appearance built only around his name.

Smith’s booking carries unusual circumstances

The fight was announced while Smith has a criminal case pending in Nebraska following an alleged incident involving his wife. He has pleaded not guilty, and the court has not reached a verdict. A status hearing is scheduled for Sept. 21, less than two weeks before the event. The judge overseeing the matter has granted Smith permission to travel to the Dominican Republic, so the case does not currently prevent him from competing on Oct. 2.

Gamebred FC addressed its decision instead of ignoring the legal situation. Promotion president and COO Lex McMahon emphasized due process and the presumption of innocence, while making clear that booking Smith should not be read as a conclusion about the allegations. The organization’s position is that the legal system, not a fight promotion or public commentary, must determine the outcome of the case.

That boundary is important. Smith has an announced job and court approval to make the trip, but neither fact resolves the allegations. Gamebred FC can explain why it is allowing him to work without trying to decide what happened. In the same way, reporting the bout does not require treating a pending case as settled in either direction. The relevant facts are that Smith pleaded not guilty, the proceedings remain active and his travel request was approved.

A second heavyweight test awaits

Inside the ring, Smith is trying to build on the Sherman victory. His first Gamebred FC bout showed that his grappling remains a serious weapon at heavyweight, but Heiderman presents a different challenge. The former PFL prospect has lost only once in eight professional appearances and enters with considerably less wear than the 38-year-old veteran. Smith has the deeper résumé; Heiderman has the chance to defeat the most recognizable opponent of his career.

The heavyweight setting also gives Smith room to compete without returning to the light-heavyweight cut that defined most of his UFC run. His submission in April lasted long enough to show that this stage of his career can be more than a single farewell appearance. A win in the grand prix main event would give the promotion a proven veteran with consecutive victories and would keep Smith active while his longer-term plans remain open.

There is still an unavoidable pause between the announcement and fight night. The Sept. 21 hearing comes first, and any change in the court proceedings could affect the practical picture. As things stand, however, Smith has permission to leave the country and Gamebred FC has kept the matchup on its schedule. The promotion has not announced a replacement or suggested that the bout is provisional.

For Smith, the immediate sporting question is more straightforward. He beat an experienced opponent in his debut and now meets a younger heavyweight with a strong record in the main event. If the legal schedule remains unchanged and the Oct. 2 fight proceeds, Heiderman will provide the next measure of whether Smith’s new chapter can develop into a sustained run.
