Michael Page Removed from UFC Rankings

Michael Page left Paris with another UFC victory and a much less certain place in the promotion. Soon after his unanimous-decision win over Nursulton Ruziboev, media members who vote in the UFC rankings were told that Page was no longer eligible to appear on their ballots. The notice arrived just as the final fight on his current contract had been completed.

Those developments naturally created talk of an exit, but they do not amount to an official release announcement. Page has not said that the UFC dismissed him, and his management had not presented a signed deal elsewhere when the rankings news emerged. The accurate position is narrower: his existing agreement has run its course, his rankings eligibility has been removed, and his next contract remains undecided.

The rankings notice answers only one question

MMA journalist John Morgan shared the wording sent to voting panelists. They were instructed to remove Page from consideration and, if they had ranked him at middleweight, to adjust the division so that it again contained 15 eligible athletes. That makes the administrative change clear even though the reason and long-term consequence were not explained in a public UFC statement.

Rankings eligibility and employment are related, but they are not identical. A fighter can disappear from a ballot because of inactivity, a change in divisional plans or a contractual issue. In Page’s case, the timing matters because he entered the Ruziboev bout knowing it was the last fight on his deal. Still, timing alone cannot tell us whether negotiations have ended or are about to begin.

Page has said that he intends to speak honestly with UFC officials. He wants to explain what he can improve and hear whether the company still sees value in another agreement. That conversation, rather than the rankings email, will decide whether his UFC run continues. Until either side describes its outcome, calling Page a former UFC fighter would move ahead of the evidence.

The Paris result gives him a strong negotiating point on paper. Page is 5-1 in the UFC and has won four consecutive fights. His only promotional loss came against Ian Machado Garry, while the latest victory added a respected opponent to his record. The complication is that none of Page’s six UFC appearances has produced a finish, something the veteran himself acknowledged after Saturday’s bout.

Page did not leave the arena celebrating the performance as proof that nothing needed to change. He felt he held back, searched too often for the perfect opening and failed to give the crowd the sustained offence he believes he can produce. The scorecards went his way, but his own review was considerably harsher than the result.

That self-criticism helps explain his plan for the next training cycle. Page wants to experiment in sparring with a busier approach, even if it means allowing opponents to feel more comfortable stepping toward him. His unusual movement works best when another fighter gives him space to create angles, yet too much patience can turn that advantage into long periods with little action.

There is a real tension in asking Page to become less like himself. His evasive style, speed and distance management are the tools that carried him through Bellator and into the UFC. Taking reckless risks for entertainment would be a poor bargain. The more realistic adjustment is one of volume: preserve the difficult target while initiating more exchanges instead of waiting for every opportunity to arrive.
