Mauricio Ruffy Eyes UFC 331 Title Route

Mauricio Ruffy believes his UFC 331 co-main event with Arman Tsarukyan offers a direct route to the lightweight championship. Ruffy says the promotion and current champion Justin Gaethje described the matchup that way when he accepted it. The statement explains his expectations, but the UFC has not publicly guaranteed that the winner will receive the next title shot.

The fight is scheduled for Sept. 19 in Los Angeles and arrived on a little more than 30 days’ notice. Ruffy accepted despite the compressed camp because Tsarukyan is one of the division’s leading contenders and the opportunity is larger than the risk of waiting for a more comfortable matchup.

Ruffy Builds His Camp Around Tsarukyan’s Wrestling

Ruffy’s reputation comes from his striking. Thirteen of his 14 professional wins have ended by knockout, and his recent UFC run includes finishes of Rafael Fiziev and Michael Chandler. Tsarukyan presents the opposite type of test: a strong wrestler with the ability to control position and force opponents to work before they can establish their offense.

That contrast has pushed Ruffy outside his normal preparation. He says the camp has emphasized takedown defense, escapes and the discipline required to return to his feet without giving away another position. The goal is not to transform into a different fighter in a month. It is to protect enough space for the power and timing that made the matchup attractive in the first place.

Ruffy has already experienced the cost of losing control on the ground. His only UFC defeat came by submission against Benoit Saint Denis in Paris in 2025. Since then, the wins over Fiziev and Chandler have rebuilt his momentum, but Tsarukyan can test whether the lessons from that loss hold up against an even more accomplished wrestling threat.

A Knockout Remains Ruffy’s Preferred Answer

Tsarukyan has spent much of the past 15 months competing in wrestling and grappling events, activity that should keep his strongest phase sharp even when he is not fighting in the Octagon. Ruffy does not sound interested in matching that résumé position for position. He wants to defend the entries, make Tsarukyan reset and create the striking exchanges where one clean sequence can end the fight.

That approach fits Ruffy’s career numbers, but it also carries danger. Throwing with too much commitment can open the hips for a takedown, while waiting too cautiously can allow Tsarukyan to control the pace. Ruffy has to threaten the knockout without letting the search for it make the wrestling easier.

The booking also changed after Tsarukyan had been expected to face Charles Oliveira. Plans shifted following the death of Tsarukyan’s teammate Allan Nascimento, and Ruffy ultimately became the opponent for Los Angeles. That background is part of how the fight came together; it does not reduce the competitive stakes now that both men have agreed to meet.

There is also a difference between a promised opportunity and an earned argument. If Ruffy wins, he can point to Tsarukyan, Fiziev and Chandler when asking for a championship fight. The promotion will still control the final decision, and the rest of the lightweight schedule may affect who is available.
