Daniel Cormier Defends Usman After Cage Incident

Daniel Cormier has pushed back against claims that Usman Nurmagomedov deliberately attacked Song Yadong after the UFC Shanghai main event. Usman entered the cage moments after Song knocked out his brother Umar, then crossed paths with the celebrating winner. Cormier says the footage shows a worried brother trying to reach Umar, not a planned attempt to strike Song.

The former UFC champion did not argue that jumping into the cage was acceptable. He acknowledged that Usman was not authorized to enter and could face consequences for doing so. His defense is narrower: the brief contact should not be described as an elbow or intentional assault unless clearer evidence establishes that intent.

Cormier Separates the Rule Violation From the Contact

Those two questions have often been merged online. The first is simple: a cornerman or family member cannot climb into the Octagon whenever he chooses. Officials need space to protect an injured fighter, control the winner’s celebration and prevent a tense moment from becoming a wider confrontation. Usman’s concern for Umar explains the decision emotionally, but it does not make the entry legal.

The second question is what happened when Usman and Song met near the center of the cage. Song was running in celebration, while Usman was moving quickly toward his brother. Their paths converged, a hand or forearm made contact and security immediately reacted. Different camera angles make the motion look more or less aggressive, which is exactly why a definite claim about an intentional strike requires caution.

Cormier said Usman neither elbowed Song nor entered with the purpose of attacking him. He also admitted that his connection to the Nurmagomedov team affects how he sees the incident. That admission is important: his comments provide an informed interpretation from someone close to the family, not an official ruling from the commission or the UFC.

Concern for Umar Does Not Erase Song’s Moment

Song had just produced the biggest win of his career. He was entitled to celebrate without encountering an unauthorized person in the cage. Even if Usman’s only intention was to reach Umar, his entry created a preventable collision and shifted attention away from the winner. Cormier’s defense of intent does not require ignoring that effect.

Umar also deserved immediate medical care after a hard knockout. Family members often react before they have processed what happened, especially when an athlete remains down. Officials are there precisely because emotional urgency can make a reasonable person ignore boundaries that exist for everyone’s safety.

No confirmed punishment was announced in the initial reports. Any fine, suspension or other sanction would need to come from the relevant authority rather than from social-media demands. Until then, the established facts are limited to the unauthorized entry, the brief contact and the separation that followed.

The discussion should remain distinct from the fight result. Song knocked out Umar at 1:48 of round two. Nothing in the post-fight confusion changes that outcome or the skill involved in timing the right uppercut. Cormier himself credited both Song’s performance and Umar’s willingness to take a difficult matchup.
