Valter Walker Warns Almeida About ACA 207

Valter Walker believes Jailton Almeida has been handed a particularly dangerous assignment for his first fight after leaving the UFC. Almeida meets former ACA heavyweight champion Evgeniy Goncharov at ACA 207 on September 12 in Krasnodar, Russia. Walker has trained with Goncharov and says the Russian heavyweight’s combination of size and wrestling could take away Almeida’s most reliable path to victory.

Walker’s warning is blunt: he thinks the matchup may be a trap. That is a teammate’s assessment rather than a neutral prediction, but it comes from recent firsthand rounds with Goncharov. Walker described a heavyweight who weighs about 130 kilograms, remains lean at that size and is extremely difficult to move once an opponent reaches his legs.

Walker sees Goncharov as a bad style matchup

Almeida built his rise through the UFC heavyweight division around takedowns, back control and submissions. He is unusually quick for the weight class and often closes distance before larger opponents can settle into their striking. Against Goncharov, Walker questions whether the first part of that formula will work at all.

Speaking after training with the former ACA champion, Walker said he found a clean entry on a leg but could not complete the takedown. He compared Goncharov’s defense to a wall and argued that Almeida will face the same problem against a man carrying considerably more mass. If Almeida cannot put the fight on the ground, he may have to spend longer striking than he normally prefers.

That does not make the result automatic. Almeida has repeatedly controlled heavier opponents, and his grappling involves more than a single shot. He can chain attempts against the fence, attack from body locks and move quickly to the back. Walker’s point is that Goncharov’s balance, wrestling background and physical strength may force Almeida to work through several layers of defense before he reaches those positions.

ACA 207 is an immediate test after the UFC

Almeida enters the bout after consecutive losses brought his UFC run to an end. Taking on a former ACA champion in Russia offers no gentle rebuilding stage. Goncharov will compete in familiar surroundings and brings the sort of defensive strengths that directly challenge Almeida’s identity as a fighter.

Walker knows both the style and the physical experience of those rounds. He has become one of the UFC heavyweight division’s most dangerous submission threats, winning five consecutive fights by submission. His own success makes the warning interesting, even if his relationship with Goncharov gives him an obvious reason to favor his training partner.

The “trap” language should therefore be read as analysis, not evidence of improper matchmaking. ACA has booked Almeida against a proven heavyweight in the promotion’s home market. The difficulty is real, but the claim that the matchup was designed to traumatize him is Walker’s colorful interpretation of that difficulty.
