Mauricio Ruffy believes his work in Australia has prepared him to beat Arman Tsarukyan and move into the UFC lightweight title picture. The Brazilian faces Tsarukyan in the September 19 co-main event at UFC 331 in Los Angeles, after a camp that brought him into Alexander Volkanovski’s training environment at Freestyle MMA.

Ruffy described the preparation as among the most demanding of his career. He credited Volkanovski with spending additional time on the mats helping him refine positions, alongside work with Brad Riddell, Frank Hickman and the wider team. The goal is to show a more complete game against an opponent whose wrestling presents a clear challenge.

The opportunity comes after consecutive stoppage wins over Rafael Fiziev and Michael Chandler. Ruffy has already demonstrated the striking that made him a fan favorite. Tsarukyan now offers a different test: whether those weapons can remain effective against a contender capable of changing where the fight takes place.

A fresh camp follows two important rebound wins

Ruffy’s recent results explain why this matchup carries weight. His official UFC record lists a second-round stoppage of Fiziev at UFC 325 on January 31, followed by a first-round finish of Chandler at UFC Freedom 250 on June 14. Those wins restored momentum after Benoit Saint Denis submitted him in September 2025.

The Chandler victory was particularly visible because it happened on the White House card. Cejudo also pointed to Volkanovski’s ability to regain his feet as a useful resource for a fighter preparing to face Tsarukyan.

That is an assessment of Ruffy’s prospects, not a confirmed next booking. The lightweight championship picture also includes former champion Ilia Topuria seeking another chance at Gaethje. A win would give Ruffy a strong argument, but the UFC would still have to decide the next title matchup.
