Marlon Vera Ends Skid at UFC 331

Marlon Vera ended more than three years without a victory by stopping Charles Jourdain at UFC 331. The Ecuadorian bantamweight finished the preliminary card in Los Angeles with a third-round TKO, dropping Jourdain again before the Canadian signaled that he could not continue.

Referee Mike Beltran stopped the fight at 2:02 of Round 3 on September 19. UFC lists the result as a TKO by strikes. It ended Vera’s four-fight losing streak and gave him his first win since his decision over Pedro Munhoz at UFC 292 in August 2023.

For Vera, the relief was obvious in the interview that followed. For much of the fight, however, he had to earn that moment gradually. Jourdain was competitive early and initially held an advantage in volume. Vera’s heavier individual shots began to count for more as the fight developed, until the knockdowns changed its direction decisively.

Vera turns a close opening into a damaging finish

The first round was more balanced than the ending might suggest. Jourdain landed more frequently, while Vera supplied several of the stronger single blows. There was room for both men to work, and the exchanges near the fence at the end of the round showed that Jourdain was still willing to press forward.

That balance shifted in the second. Vera became more productive without losing the power behind his punches. UFC’s recap credited him with dropping Jourdain twice in the round. Those moments forced the Canadian to spend time recovering and gave Vera opportunities to follow with strikes on the ground.

Vera kept building in the third instead of letting Jourdain settle back into an exchange of single shots. Another knockdown brought the ending: Jourdain waved to Beltran, and the referee intervened. Although some reports described the signal as a submission to punches, the promotion’s official result identifies a TKO. It was the sustained striking damage that brought the bout to a halt.

Jourdain had been seeking a fourth straight victory. Instead, he became the opponent against whom Vera recovered the finishing threat that has long been a major part of his bantamweight career. Vera’s patience after hurting him mattered: he kept control of the attack rather than allowing one successful punch to turn into a reckless chase.

An emotional return to the win column

Vera told Joe Rogan that he badly needed the result after four decision defeats. He said he had kept working through that stretch and credited his family, faith and persistence with helping him continue. The interview carried the weight of a fighter who had spent a long time preparing without the reward of a win.

He also thanked the people around his rebuilt training setup. The Rosas brothers, their father and returning coaches were part of the group he credited after the bout. Those changes had been a subject of discussion before UFC 331; Saturday provided the first chance to judge how Vera would perform with them behind him.

Several elements of the performance made the comeback more substantial than a narrow result on the cards:

• Vera increased his output after the first round rather than relying solely on isolated power shots.
• Repeated knockdowns left Jourdain having to recover instead of building his own rhythm.
• The finish arrived with Vera still applying pressure, ending the contest before the judges were needed.

In his later media appearance, Vera described how clearly he could hear the different instructions from his corner. He said the coaching helped him keep moving and changing stances instead of planting his feet to hunt for one punch. That explanation offers a practical reason for the appreciation he showed his team immediately after the victory.

The win does not automatically restore Vera to title contention, and he did not name a selected next opponent in that media session. It does give him a useful performance to take into his next camp: a competitive opening, a stronger middle round and a finish reached through continuing pressure.

After years of difficult decisions, Vera did not have to stand through another reading of the scorecards. His next appearance will begin from a win, with a coaching group he believes is working and a reminder that his power still changes fights when he creates enough opportunities to use it.
