Joanderson Brito says his corner had spotted a possible opening before his fight with Giga Chikadze even began. After knocking out Chikadze at UFC 331, the Brazilian explained that his coach had warned him the Georgian might slip while kicking on the fresh canvas.
That is how the bout turned. Chikadze had enjoyed early success with his striking before losing his footing on a head kick. Brito followed him down, established top position and finished with punches at 1:57 of the first round on September 19 in Los Angeles.
Brito’s account added a specific detail to a finish that had looked sudden from the outside. He said he and his coach noticed water fall onto Chikadze’s feet before the opening bout of the night. His coach linked that observation to the new surface and Chikadze’s kicking style, then told Brito to be ready for a slip.
A warning from the corner meets an opening
Chikadze began by using the weapons that made the matchup dangerous: kicks to the body and head, supported by punches at range. UFC’s recap described those attacks as forcing Brito backward. The eventual winner had to work through that early offense before the fight moved to the ground.
When Chikadze slipped, Brito reacted immediately. He followed into the guard and began punching from above rather than allowing his opponent time to stand. The attack continued until the referee stopped the bout. UFC recorded a knockout by strikes, with the contest lasting less than two minutes.
The slip changed the position, but it did not complete the finish by itself. Brito still had to stay on top and land enough clean offense to prevent a recovery. His reaction was what converted an awkward moment for Chikadze into a fight-ending sequence.

Speaking afterward, Brito described the coach’s warning as part of what he had anticipated. The observation about water remains his explanation of the circumstances; it is not an independent finding that water caused the fall or that Chikadze did anything improper. The visible sporting sequence was a lost footing, a rapid follow-up and a sustained attack from top position.
Brito wants a lasting place among the contenders
The win extended Brito’s streak to three UFC victories and gave him consecutive stoppages this year. It also added Chikadze to a record that already includes a 2021 Contender Series victory over Diego Lopes. Brito is building a run against recognizable opposition rather than relying on one isolated highlight.
He did not respond by demanding an immediate championship opportunity. In the post-fight comments reported by Sherdog, Brito said his current ambition was to establish himself in the top five and remain there. He pointed to Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje as examples of fighters whose years near the top had impressed him.
That target is different from claiming a ranking has already been awarded. His performance can strengthen a case for tougher opposition, but Brito’s stated ambition does not determine the next rankings update or commit the UFC to a particular matchup.
His latest win supplied three useful pieces of evidence for that longer project:
- He stayed in the fight while Chikadze’s early kicks were finding their mark.
- He reacted quickly when the range changed, giving Chikadze little time to recover his feet.
- He finished from top position rather than settling for control after the initial opening.
There is also a lesson in the portion of the fight that preceded the finish. Chikadze was effective before the slip, so the knockout should not erase the work Brito still has to do when facing skilled kickers at distance. His ability to punish one mistake was decisive here; future opponents may require him to create a similar opening himself.
Brito left with the result he wanted and a clear description of what he wants next from his career. The corner’s warning is the unusual detail of this victory, but his longer-term progress will depend on repeating the response: remaining alert under pressure, recognizing an opening and doing enough with it to close the fight.
