Julia Polastri’s head-kick finish of Xiong Jingnan at UFC Shanghai has been selected as UFC.com’s Knockout of the Month for August. The recognition follows a first-round performance in which the Brazilian kept pressing, limited Xiong’s room to escape and found the finishing strike as the Chinese veteran tried to move away from the fence.
The result was already important for Polastri before the monthly award arrived. She entered Shanghai with an uneven UFC run and needed a performance that could create momentum rather than extend a win-loss pattern. Stopping a decorated combat-sports veteran in front of a home crowd for her opponent gave her exactly that, while the technique of the finish made it one of the month’s most memorable moments.

Polastri built the knockout through pressure
The decisive kick did not come from a static exchange in the center. During the first half of the opening round, Polastri was the fighter moving forward and landing the cleaner shots. Xiong was willing to trade and had success of her own, but the Brazilian repeatedly pushed her behind the black boundary line, where the available angles became smaller and retreating safely became more difficult.
Polastri then disguised the attack. As Xiong dipped and feinted while looking for space, Polastri pawed with a low left and extended her right hand to draw attention. The high kick followed immediately from the same side. Xiong was moving on the exit when it landed, adding force to a strike she did not have time to read or block. The sequence showed why pressure matters even when the finish itself lasts only a second.
Why the award matters for Polastri
UFC.com’s monthly report did not present the knockout as proof that every question about Polastri has been answered. It praised the finish and the performance, then pointed to consistency as the next challenge. That is a fair distinction. A spectacular win raises a fighter’s profile, but the value of the moment grows only if the next appearance builds on it.
Polastri now has a stronger platform from which to do that. She is a Contender Series graduate who has shown finishing ability throughout her career, and the Shanghai victory added a signature UFC highlight. The official timing lists the stoppage at 3:06 of the first round. More important than the clock was the construction: sustained forward movement, control of the outer lane and a feint that concealed the kick.
Xiong’s experience made the finish more meaningful. She was not simply standing still or waiting to be hit; she was trying to create a way out after being pressed toward the edge. Polastri anticipated that escape and attacked at the moment of transition. It was a tactical answer to a moving target, not a hopeful kick thrown from too far away.
- Polastri stopped Xiong Jingnan by first-round KO/TKO at 3:06 in Shanghai.
- The finish came from a right high kick as Xiong tried to exit under pressure.
- UFC.com chose the sequence as its Knockout of the Month for August.

| Key detail | What happened |
|---|---|
| Pressure | Polastri kept Xiong close to the outer boundary and reduced her escape routes. |
| Setup | A low left and extended right hand occupied Xiong’s attention before the kick. |
| Finish | The right high kick landed as Xiong moved away, ending the bout in Round 1. |
The award gives Polastri a clean headline from August, but her own career still depends on what follows. She has alternated results during parts of her UFC run, so the next task is to turn one excellent night into sustained progress. Nothing in the monthly recognition guarantees a ranking, opponent or title opportunity.
What it does confirm is that Polastri produced the standout knockout of the month by combining pressure with a thoughtful setup. The Shanghai finish looked sudden in real time, yet the position, feints and timing behind it had been developing throughout the round. That blend of preparation and execution is why the highlight deserves to last beyond one replay.
