Jai Opetaia Chases Unification in Las Vegas

Jai Opetaia’s next assignment is about collecting another belt, not simply protecting the ones he already owns. The Australian cruiserweight meets Noel Mikaelian on September 12 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, where both men will put championship hardware at stake. Their unification bout sits in the co-main event slot beneath Ryan Garcia versus Conor Benn, giving Opetaia a prominent stage for the next step in his pursuit of an undisputed championship.

Opetaia enters as the cruiserweight world champion and the Zuffa Boxing champion, while Mikaelian brings another version of the world title. That makes the result easy to understand: one champion will leave with a larger share of the division. It does not complete the undisputed picture by itself, but it moves the winner closer and gives Opetaia the kind of opponent he has repeatedly asked to face.

Opetaia has built his title run across three countries

The climb began in 2022, when Opetaia outpointed Mairis Briedis to win his first world championship. Seven years of professional development led to that night, and the title changed the level of every assignment that followed. He stopped Jordan Thompson in London in September 2023, knocked out Ellis Zorro in the opening round in Riyadh, and then returned to Saudi Arabia for a rematch with Briedis.

The second Briedis fight again went to the scorecards, with Opetaia taking another unanimous decision. A stoppage of Jack Massey in October 2024 completed a run of three title defenses in Saudi Arabia. Opetaia then fought three times on Australia’s Gold Coast, stopping David Nyika, Claudio Squeo and Huseyin Cinkara. The sequence showed that he could carry his form through different venues, opponents and styles without losing control of the belt.

His move to Zuffa Boxing created a new stage for the same ambition. On March 8, 2026, Opetaia defeated Brandon Glanton over 12 rounds in his promotional debut. All three judges returned scores of 119-106. The victory preserved his existing championship and added the Zuffa Boxing title, giving him two belts before the Mikaelian bout was arranged.

Mikaelian brings a real unification test

Mikaelian arrives as a two-time cruiserweight champion who regained his belt by unanimous decision over Badou Jack on December 13, 2025. He is not a ceremonial opponent attached to a showcase. He has a championship of his own and the experience of rebuilding after losing it, which gives the Las Vegas matchup clear competitive weight.

For Opetaia, the challenge is to impose the pressure and accuracy that have carried him through a long run of defenses without becoming impatient about the prize. Mikaelian’s belt makes the occasion bigger, but the work still comes down to distance, timing and decisions made round by round. An undisputed goal can become a distraction if a fighter starts looking beyond the champion in front of him.

The bout also offers a useful measure of Opetaia’s development since the first Briedis fight. His championship years have included early knockouts, late stoppages and disciplined decisions. Glanton took him the full distance in March, and Mikaelian now asks him to defeat another titleholder rather than a challenger trying to take his place.

There is a practical consequence beyond the belts. A convincing win over Mikaelian would leave Opetaia with fewer credible rivals who can be presented as equal champions, strengthening his hand when the remaining titleholders discuss terms. A narrow or untidy victory would still count in the record, but it would do less to settle the debate over who controls the division. That difference gives the performance itself importance alongside the official result.
