Islam Makhachev answered Jordan Burroughs’ wrestling challenge by offering to meet the Olympic champion inside a cage.

Islam Makhachev answered Jordan Burroughs’ latest challenge with a condition that changes the entire nature of the proposed matchup. After Burroughs called for a wrestling contest in Russia, the UFC welterweight champion congratulated the Olympic gold medalist and replied: “In the cage, anywhere anytime.” The response accepts the competitive idea while moving it away from pure wrestling and toward the environment Makhachev knows best.

That does not mean an MMA fight has been booked. Neither athlete announced a contract, date, weight or promoter. What exists is a public exchange between one of the world’s most accomplished wrestlers and one of MMA’s leading champions, with each man favoring the rules that best suit his career.

Burroughs issued the challenge after RAF Moscow

Burroughs created the moment with a dominant performance at Real American Freestyle in Moscow. He defeated Magomed Kurbanaliev by 10-0 technical fall in less than 90 seconds, then used his post-match interview to address Makhachev directly. Burroughs emphasized that he had travelled to the Russian capital and beaten one of the country’s champions before saying Makhachev was the person he wanted next.

In a freestyle wrestling match, Burroughs would bring an obvious advantage. He won Olympic gold in 2012, added multiple world championships and spent more than a decade competing against elite specialists. His attack speed, control through transitions and experience with the scoring system have been refined at a level few combat athletes ever reach.

Makhachev’s reply redirected the challenge into a cage. That can reasonably be read as an MMA counteroffer, although his brief message did not spell out rules. Inside an MMA setting, wrestling remains crucial but shares space with striking, submissions, the fence and a very different approach to pacing. Those additions would move the contest toward Makhachev’s professional expertise.

The rules are the real center of the debate

Cross-discipline challenges are compelling because they sound simple while hiding the most important variable. A wrestling match asks whether Makhachev can compete with an Olympic specialist under Burroughs’ rules. An MMA bout asks whether Burroughs can adapt his wrestling while defending strikes and submissions. The athletes’ names stay the same, but the competitive question changes completely.

Makhachev has not taken part in the RAF crossover matches that have recently attracted UFC fighters such as Khamzat Chimaev, Arman Tsarukyan and Sean Brady. His UFC career has instead been built around combining takedowns and control with submission threats and increasingly confident striking. Asking him to remove those tools would be a major concession.

Burroughs, meanwhile, has never built a professional MMA career. His confidence in a wrestling contest rests on an exceptional résumé rather than promotional hype. Moving into a cage would require preparation for threats that do not exist in freestyle, even before questions of size and weight are addressed.

  • Burroughs beat Magomed Kurbanaliev 10-0 by technical fall at RAF Moscow.
  • He then called for a wrestling match with Makhachev in Russia.
  • Makhachev responded that he would meet Burroughs “in the cage, anywhere anytime.”

Realidade atual No rules, date, weight or organizer has been agreed.

The exchange works as a sporting argument precisely because both men can make a credible claim from their own side. Burroughs has the deeper pure-wrestling résumé; Makhachev has spent his career turning wrestling into a complete cage-fighting system. A real event would need them to agree on which question they actually want to answer.

For now, the story ends with two public invitations pointing in different directions. Burroughs wants Makhachev on a wrestling mat in Russia. Makhachev is willing to meet him in a cage. Until one side accepts the other’s conditions—or a compromise is announced—the matchup remains an intriguing exchange rather than a scheduled fight.
