Menifield Beats Baraniewski With Injured Thumb

Alonzo Menifield beat Iwo Baraniewski by split decision at UFC 331 while fighting with a badly injured left thumb. The veteran light heavyweight survived a difficult opening round, passed a ringside examination before the third and completed the fight to hand Baraniewski his first professional defeat.

Two judges scored the September 19 bout in Los Angeles 29-28 for Menifield; the third gave Baraniewski the same margin. Menifield later said the thumb injury happened in the first round. UFC’s event report described a compound fracture, an injury that became especially visible when the broadcast focused on his hand during the medical check.

The damage was only part of the challenge. Baraniewski had also hurt Menifield with his punches, forcing the older fighter to recover while working with a compromised hand. Menifield’s response over the remaining rounds turned the main-card opener into a test of persistence as much as power.

Baraniewski’s fast start gives way to a long fight

Baraniewski entered unbeaten after three rapid UFC finishes. His wins over Ibo Aslan, Austen Lane and Junior Tafa had all come inside 90 seconds, leaving little evidence of how he would handle an opponent who could withstand that opening burst and make him work deeper into a contest.

He initially looked capable of adding another early stoppage. Menifield landed punches of his own, but Baraniewski connected with the more damaging shots in several exchanges and put him under pressure near the fence. Menifield tied him up when necessary and stayed in the fight despite being visibly troubled.

The momentum became less predictable in the second round. Menifield came forward throwing combinations, and the pair spent longer stretches wrestling for position against the cage. Their pace slowed as fatigue set in. When they separated, both still had enough power to make the other hesitate, although neither could finish the job.

Before the final round, the ringside doctor examined Menifield’s left hand. Menifield insisted he wanted to continue and was allowed to do so. That permission did not mean the injury had become minor: he still had five minutes of clinch work and striking to negotiate with the damaged thumb.

Experience helps Menifield finish the job

The third round offered fewer extended exchanges than the first. Baraniewski pressed Menifield against the fence, Menifield reversed positions, and both tried to create room for short punches. The clinch became a place to slow the pace and compete for control while their energy reserves dwindled.

After a late separation, Menifield continued looking for his jab and pressing the action. It was a close fight rather than a runaway comeback, as the split scorecards reflected. His ability to remain active with the injury gave two judges enough reason to award him the decision.

The win adds another difficult assignment to a recent run in which Menifield has repeatedly tested emerging light heavyweights:

• He had already become the first professional opponent to defeat Oumar Sy.
• He entered UFC 331 after stopping Zhang Mingyang in May, another victory over a prospect with considerable momentum.
• Baraniewski’s unbeaten record ended after Menifield took him beyond the short bouts that had defined his UFC rise.

Those results help explain why Menifield remains an awkward opponent for younger fighters trying to establish themselves. His experience does not prevent him from being hurt, as Saturday showed, but he can survive an opponent’s best stretch and keep asking questions once an early finish is no longer available.

Menifield’s explanation afterward was personal. Speaking in the Octagon, he connected his determination to hardship during his childhood, including memories of his mother searching through trash. He said he would have continued even with more extensive damage to the hand. The personal account explained the determination behind his performance without making the injury itself any less serious.

The result gives Menifield consecutive wins and leaves Baraniewski facing the first setback of his professional career. The injury also makes Menifield’s recovery an immediate concern, but no treatment plan or return date was established in the post-fight accounts reviewed for this report. For now, his next sporting step follows a victory earned over the full distance.
